An analysis was carried outon the average yield and hectoliter weight from each one of 32 trials carried out on bread and durum wheat in the north-central zone by the Instituto de Investigaciones Agropecuarias (INIA), Santiago, Chile, in 1975, 1976 and 1977.
When breadand durum wheats were compared in the same locality in 1975 and 1976, on yield and hectoliter weight basis, no important differences were found. Therefore, no different responses seems to be present under similar environmental conditions (in sécts , diseases, climate, soil, etc.) betweenbread and durum wheats.
The response was quite similar in 1977 for 4 localities, but there was a big difference at La Platina and Curicó, where durum wheats where substantially inferior to bread wheats in yield and hectoliter weight.
Comparing high and low yielding trials, it was found that yield reduction was more important fordurum than for breadwheats. Grain number was the main reason of this reduetion, which reached almost 50% in durum wheats, and only 20% in bread wheats.
Differences between durumand bread wheat behaviour, at La Platina in 1977, apparently were associated to soil diseases.
