During 1973/74 the behavior of 66 bean varieties and cross derived lines to a strain of yellow bean mosaic virus was studied, both under greenhouse and field conditions. this virus has affected mainly, the production of bean varieties for export in the central-southern bean growing area. Pure lines derived from the gross negro Argel x Great Northern 31 were obtained bye the breeding program at La Platina Experimental Station. These black-seeded and Navy Bean type lines are resistant to cammon bean mosaic and its strain N.Y.15. Of all varieties tested, only seven black-seeded and five Navy Bean types, were wither tolerant or resistant to the strain of YBMV studied. From the breeding material, 15 lines of black-seeded and 10 Navy Bean types, were resitant to the virus. The selected material was increased the past season at Quilamapu Experimental Station and nine weere selected to be tested in further yield trials. |
