The effect of seeding and harvesttimes onyield of three species grown for supplementary forage in the Osorno area during the 1965/66 and 1966/67 seasons, was studied. The species studied were Swede (Brassica napus L.) Turnip (Brassica rapa L.) and Fodder Rape (Brassica biennis L.). Seven seeding times, september to march, were compared in both seasons. Ideal popl;llation percentage, summer and winter development, and dry matter yield were recorded. Harvest was effected in winter (july) in both seasons, plus an additional summer harvesting (february) in the 1965/66 season. Conclusions were: 1. Rape, swede and tumip sown in october can be used as summer supplementary forage. 2. As long as no resistant varieties are available, it is not recomended to use these species. as winter supplementary forage, bec, ause of their high susceptibility to diseases affecting foliage and root. |
