A four year trial on weed control by hand weeding on bean culture was carried outat Paine Experimental Station. The results of four different treatments of weeding were compared with unweeded culture. The figures obtained show that a significative increase in yield is reached by weeding over the check (not, weeded) in every treatment, but no significant differences were observed between treatments. It should be deducted that one weeding a few days after the first irrigation cannot be neglected. Despite the fact that no significant difference wassshown, a second weeding 50 days after the sowing can be recommended because then increase in yield obtained compensates then expense of this labor. A third weeding is also recommended because of its low labor cost, to eliminate the few weeds that survive the second weeding. More than three weedings are not recommended because harvest time will be reached before the weeds can cause any depressive effect upon yields. |
