The serious ,problem. of inadecuate supply qf durum wheat for spághetti production is discussed. Increase in consumption, which has reaehed three anda half its value in 1936-1938 and decrease in yield due to disease attack are believed to be the reasons for this definit. Over 400 durum wheat varieties imported from different countries were studied as a possible means of meeting the dificit. Disease resistance wassobtained, bud not good agrictiltural characteristics. Results of crosses of some varieties are described. About 2.000 qq. of seed is available from the cross Capelli x Giza, which is disease resistant and has better agricultural characteristics than Capelli.
