ABSTRACT
Differential aluminium tolerance among wheat cultivars

The relative aluminium tolerance of 48 commercial Chilean wheat cultivars was evaluaste. Seedlings were grown for 10 days in a 20% strength Steinberg solution containing O, 3, 6 and 9 mg Al L-1 at pH 4.5 and then removed to measure root length. Four control cultivars, CNT-1 and Maringa (high AItolerant), and Jupateco and 7-Cerros (AI-sensitive) were included in the experiment. None of the Chilean cultivars were as high AI-tolerant as CNT-1 and Maringa whose root growth was not reduced at the highest aluminium concentration. Cultivars Dalcahue and Antufén were only affected by 6 and 9 mg Al L-1, and therefore classified as tolerant. Cultivars Lancero, Carahue, Colono, Lautaro, atto, Onda, SNA 210, Millaleu, Pitufo, Cisne, Ukay, Amigo and As did not resist 6 mg Al L-1 and are were considered as semi tolerant. Cultivars Kona, Peumo, SNA 220, Unico, Candela, Taita, Laurel, Pukem, Malihue, Chifén, Domo, Collafén, Ciko, Peneca, Ulifén, Saeta, Centrifén, Perquenco, Andifén, Rancofén, Premier, Paleta, SNA 204, SNA 102, Lumaco, Toquifén, Aurifén, Lancero, Quelén, Orofén, Yafén and Naofén did not tolerate 3 mg Al L-1 and were classified as sensitive.
